Gary enjoyed an excellent second season at Norwich City, being voted 'Player of the Season' in recognition of his superbly consistent displays at the heart of the Canaries' defence. He missed just four league games as he finally cemented his position in the back line, having previously been regarded as a striker even at international level. Formidable in the air and with a great ability to read the game, his commitment to defending his goal was there for everyone to see. Ironically, whilst showing his best club form for some time, he was not selected by Steve Staunton in his first Republic of Ireland squad as manager. If Gary can maintain the consistent form he displayed in 2005-06, he should win his way back into the Republic squad during the forthcoming campaign.

Republic of Ireland international defender Gary Doherty joined the Canaries from Tottenham Hotspur a week into the 2004-05 season.
The big centre-back signed a three-year deal at Carrow Road and his arrival stiffened up competition for places in the City defence.
He began his career at Luton Town and soon developed a reputation as a utility man after also playing successfully as a striker during his time at Kenilworth Road.
A big money move to Tottenham followed, but Gary was unable to cement a regular place in the starting line-up at White Hart Lane and jumped at the chance of joining the Canaries.
He started his Norwich career by playing in a forward role and found the net in only his second game for City as his equaliser earned a point from a trip to St James' Park.
His preferred position is at centre back and he partnered Craig Fleming at the heart of the Canary defence for several months during the 2004-05 season before losing his place in the side to Jason Shackell.
Always a threat at set-pieces, Gary can chip in with his fair share of goals even when operating in defence.
With both international and Premiership experience to all upon, a lot will be expected of Gary in his second season at Carrow Road.
